HBO Max has a hit on its hands before the new ”Harry Potter” series has even aired. The documentary special ”The World of Harry Potter: Crafting the Magic” has spent a week at No. 1 on the platform after launching on 5 April, a strong sign that the franchise still pulls hard even while fans argue about casting and another reboot nobody exactly begged for.

The special is basically a making-of preview for the first season of HBO’s Harry Potter series, which adapts ”Philosopher’s Stone.” It shows off sets, costumes, visual effects, and casting, while also putting names and faces to the new wizarding world: Nick Frost as Hagrid, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.

That sort of backstage rollout is a smart bit of damage control. Big franchise reboots rarely get a free pass, so giving viewers craft-heavy footage ahead of the series lets HBO sell the scale of the production rather than asking audiences to trust the logo alone. It also helps that the company says the project is meant to run for ten years, which gives the show room to stretch beyond what the films could squeeze into a few hours.

Casting and the long runway for the series

The special pays particular attention to the search for the actors who will play Harry, Ron and Hermione, the three roles that always decide whether a ”Harry Potter” adaptation feels inevitable or doomed on arrival. The wider pitch is clear enough: this is not a one-off nostalgia exercise, but the start of a serialized remake designed to dig deeper into the books.

For HBO, the early chart success matters because streaming platforms are now judged as much by attention as by subscriptions. A week at the top suggests the brand still travels globally, and that the appetite for Rowling’s universe has survived the years of controversy around it. The real test, of course, starts closer to the series premiere, which is scheduled for the end of 2026.
