The OnePlus 16 is still well ahead of launch, but the rumor mill has already locked onto the OnePlus 16 camera. Two separate leaks point to a headline-making upgrade: a 200MP periscope telephoto sensor that could give OnePlus a much louder argument in the flagship camera wars.
That would be a shift in emphasis, not a full reinvention. The whispers so far suggest OnePlus may keep the rest of the rear camera package familiar, which is a very OnePlus move: put the money where the bragging rights live and hope nobody notices the recycled bits.
The rumored 200MP periscope camera
Well-known tipster Digital Chat Station says the OnePlus 16 could ship with a 200MP sensor. Another leak from Smart Pikachu adds the important detail: this may not be a generic high-resolution camera, but the same kind of 200MP periscope telephoto setup seen in the Realme GT 8 Pro.
On that phone, the sensor is the Samsung ISOCELL HP5, paired with a periscope lens that offers 3x optical zoom, an f/2.6 aperture, and a 65mm focal length. That combination matters more than the raw megapixel count; it is the sort of hardware brands use to make zoom shots look less like an apology.

The rest of the camera array may stay familiar
Leaks suggest OnePlus could pair that zoom hardware with a 50MP main camera and a 50MP ultra-wide camera. If that holds, the company is clearly betting that one big upgrade will do more marketing work than polishing every lens equally.
There is some logic there. Rival phone makers have spent the past couple of generations pushing periscope tech harder, and it has become one of the easiest ways to make a spec sheet look premium without changing the rest of the phone too much. The Oppo Find X9 Pro already uses the same sensor, which puts OnePlus in familiar company rather than experimental territory.
OnePlus 16 camera specs rumored so far
- Rumored main attraction: 200MP periscope telephoto camera
- Expected zoom setup on the Realme GT 8 Pro: 3x optical zoom
- Other leaked cameras: 50MP primary and 50MP ultra-wide
- Shared sensor family: Samsung ISOCELL HP5
What this could mean for OnePlus
For years, OnePlus has sold speed, clean software, and a ”fast but not flashy” identity. A serious telephoto upgrade would nudge it closer to the photography-first crowd, where Samsung, Oppo, and Xiaomi tend to dominate the conversation. That does not automatically make the OnePlus 16 a camera king, but it does give the brand a more interesting pitch than ”same phone, slightly better chip.”
For now, this is still leak territory, and leaks have a long, proud history of getting one detail spectacularly right and three others hilariously wrong. But if even the broad strokes are accurate, the OnePlus 16 could finally be the model that gives the brand a camera story worth telling instead of just a faster processor to talk about.
The bigger question is whether OnePlus stops at zoom muscle or uses the upgrade as the start of a broader photography push. If the company is serious, this should be the beginning, not the headline it keeps recycling for another generation.
