Huawei’s next Pura flagships could put a bigger emphasis on zoom than on headline-grabbing megapixels. A new leak says the Pura 90 Pro and Pura 90 Pro Max are set to make the periscope telephoto camera one of their main selling points, with image quality supposedly taking a clear step up from the Pura 80 line.

The tip comes from Fixed Focus, a Weibo leaker with a habit of dropping Huawei and Apple tidbits before launch. This time, the claim is that the upgrade is not just a sensor swap, but a genuine leap in telephoto performance, including better results from zoom shots. If true, that would fit Huawei’s usual playbook: win on camera hardware where rivals are still trying to make computational photography do all the heavy lifting.

LOFIC could be the real camera upgrade

The leak also points to LOFIC testing for the telephoto system. That technology is designed to improve image capture in both bright and low-light scenes, which is exactly where many periscope cameras still stumble. Samsung, Oppo, and Vivo have all pushed hard on zoom over the past few generations, so Huawei’s rumored move looks less like a luxury feature and more like a necessary response to a crowded flagship field.

Three Pura 90 phones are still on the table

Earlier reports said Huawei plans to release just three Pura 90 models this time: a standard version, the Pura 90 Pro, and a new Pro Max. That would give Huawei a tighter lineup than some Android rivals, which increasingly split their flagship ranges into four or more variants and hope buyers won’t notice the confusion. The company is also said to be preparing a Pura Pioneer launch event and a broader product presentation between 20 and 29 April.

If the leak proves accurate, the interesting question is not whether Huawei can improve its zoom camera – it usually can – but how far LOFIC and the new periscope hardware push image quality above the Pura 80 generation. In premium phones, camera bragging rights sell, and Huawei seems determined to take that battle straight to the telephoto lens.
