Dell has unveiled its latest mobile workstations, the Pro Precision 5 14S and Pro Precision 5 16S, designed to deliver powerful performance without the bulk typically associated with workstation laptops. These workstations will be available starting in May, though Dell has yet to reveal pricing details.

The standout feature of these new models is their compactness. Dell claims the Pro Precision 5 14S is its thinnest and lightest workstation equipped with H-series processors, starting at just 1.4 kg – comparable to many slim multimedia laptops.

Both models offer the newest processors, including Intel Core Ultra 300 ”Panther Lake” and AMD Ryzen AI 400 ”Gorgon Point.” Top configurations can be equipped with integrated Intel Arc B390 graphics featuring 12 Xe cores. AMD versions, however, rely on the previous-generation Radeon 890M GPU, making Intel models the better pick for users seeking peak graphical power.

The workstations support up to 64 GB of LPDDR5 RAM clocked at 8533 MT/s. Although this RAM is technically replaceable, sourcing compatible modules may prove challenging at this stage.

The metal chassis houses a backlit keyboard, fingerprint scanner, and a selection of ports. The Pro Precision 5 16S includes:

  • HDMI
  • Two USB Type-A ports
  • Two USB Type-C ports
  • Ethernet jack
  • 3.5mm audio port

However, there is no SD or microSD card slot, so users will need an adapter if card reading is required.

Compact yet powerful workstations like these reflect a trend among professional laptop users demanding desktop-class capabilities in lighter, more portable machines. While Dell’s focus on thinness challenges traditional workstation heft, the competitive landscape includes offerings like Lenovo’s ThinkPad P Series and HP’s ZBook line, all balancing performance and portability. Intel’s latest Arc graphics integration helps close the gap with discrete GPUs in mobile workstations.

Looking ahead, the key question is how well Dell’s slim Pro Precision 5 series balances thermal management and sustained performance, especially in graphics-intensive tasks. As more professionals seek capable yet portable workstations, the success of these models will hinge on real-world performance, battery life, and expansion options.
