TCL has unveiled the T7M Ultra SQD-Mini LED, a new flagship TV in China touted as the first living room model to feature SQD-Mini LED technology. Available in 64-, 75-, 85-, and 98-inch sizes, prices range from 6,799 yuan (~$987) to 15,999 yuan (~$2,323).

The TCL T7M Ultra uses SQD-Mini LED, an enhanced version of traditional Mini LED backlighting that boosts precision and contrast. It has a local dimming system with up to 2,176 zones for finer control over brightness and deeper blacks. The display covers 100% of the BT.2020 color gamut thanks to upgraded quantum dot technology, delivering richer and purer red, green, and blue tones.

Its panel, called Super Butterfly Wing Starlight, aims to raise contrast further, deepen blacks, and improve light transmission. The TCL T7M Ultra supports peak brightness up to 3,000 nits through XDR technology. Resolution is 4K with a standard refresh rate of 150 Hz that can double to 300 Hz in a special mode.

The TCL T7M Ultra sports an HVA 2.0 panel designed to improve contrast and reduce reflections, paired with dual-layer coatings to make viewing easier in bright rooms. Its slim 60 mm chassis and reduced optical distance allow it to be mounted almost flush against the wall.

Audio comes courtesy of a 2.1.2-channel Onkyo system featuring upward-firing speakers and a dedicated subwoofer. It supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X for immersive sound quality.

Under the hood, the TV runs on a quad-core A73 processor with G57 MC1 graphics, 4 GB of RAM, and up to 128 GB of storage. It operates on Lingkong OS 3.0, which offers an ad-free card-based interface with multitasking capabilities. TCL’s Fuxi AI platform enhances content recommendations, image quality, and intelligent control.

Connectivity options include four HDMI 2.1 ports with 48 Gbps bandwidth, USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports, plus dual-band Wi-Fi. Gamers benefit from variable refresh rate (VRR) and motion smoothing features for a smoother experience.

TCL’s SQD-Mini LED technology pushes Mini LED forward with a massive local dimming zone count, aiming to rival premium models from Samsung and Sony that use similar high-zone backlights and quantum dot enhancement. The 3,000-nit peak brightness places it on par with some of the brightest LCD TVs available, competing directly with Samsung’s Neo QLED series.

As TCL targets both home theater enthusiasts and gamers, the inclusion of high refresh rates and HDMI 2.1 ports appeals to next-gen console users and PC gamers alike. How the SQD-Mini LED performs in real-world viewing and gaming scenarios will be the real test, but TCL’s combination of aggressive pricing and premium specs could shake up the mid-to-high-end 4K TV segment globally.
